After months of research, I got some of this spray for protection, but first I had to test its effectiveness on myself. Once I worked up the courage, I put a bandage over one eye so I could see through one eye to get to the shower or wherever after spraying myself. Once I had sprayed myself, I waited a couple seconds, and then opened my eye, and tried as hard as I could to keep it open, but the spray forced it closed almost instantly. I kept trying to blink, but I couldn't see a thing.
If you get Fox spray, get stream pattern. I can give two reasons: You can get an effective amount of spray on target with a half second burst from eight feet away with a pattern approx. two feet in diameter. There's no way you can wet the target with a half second burst from eight feet with the cone... maybe from four feet. The second reason is there's a lot less mist that hangs in the air after spraying that can get in your eyes.
